In 2021 I was selected to take part in a critical design school, sponsored by the Design Museum, South London Gallery and Forensic Architecture. Working on a continuation of my second year undergraduate project into shipbreaking, but now through the lens of critical design thinking. Slow Cargo asks to see ships as tools and spaces for extraction, arguing that current legal, commercial and material naval practices are due to be re-designed. This project aims to explore the future of the shipping industry, seeking to ameliorate the ecological and humanitarian damage caused by shipbreaking. The project proposes changes to how we regulate the use of these yards, the re-use of the ship’s components in a cradle-to-cradle system, re-assessing the volume and distance of products currently being transported globally to a more localised system.
