House for an Arborist University for the Creative Arts / 3rd Year
A series of homes for a collective of carpenters, arborists, ecologists and forest management workers in Chartham, Canterbury. As part of this, I want to explore the possibility of re-planting a forest to provide materials for construction, as well as firewood for the inhabitants of my housing proposal. I’m really interested in the relationship between the built environment and the organic - how do we use architecture to become part of a larger ecosystem? In addition, I want to focus on renovating the existing homes on my site, rather than demolishing and rebuilding. The brief asked us to create a housing typology in response to both the landscape and our imaged character. My chosen site of Chartham, in Kent, is home to a paper mill factory, and twelve accompanying workers houses (dilapidated and abandoned) - I wanted to reclaim these and update them - it didn’t make sense to demolish and rebuild. I also propose a complete reforestation of the surrounding land once occupied by the mill.
