A renovation/retrofit of a 2200 m2 industrial yard in Fish Island, Hackney, explores circular material economies and sustainable building strategies. I’m interested in the way we design and build from a sustainable perspective, and wanted to respond to the Government’s call to build one million homes every three years. This project speculates a move to a circular material economy, considering what we can do differently with both existing buildings and new builds. The brief challenged us to identify three things - a local issue, a global issue, and a future trend - leading to a proposed program, which would in turn inform our adaption of the existing building present on our site. We were further challenged to ‘retain and revitalise’ as much as possible, whilst making sure our project was carbon neutral. I chose to retain the existing building in full, adding a timber cantilever.
